Talking to people in the Abbey & Bucknall

The TUSC campaign team were out over the weekend talking to people on the doorstep about MP’s sleaze and the need for a Workers MP on a Workers Wage. We spoke to people in the Greyfriars Road, Benedict Place area and also in Abbey Road and Bryant Road. Most agreed that we need an MP who only takes an average wage and some said they would vote for the Trade Unionist & Socialist Coalition candidate Matt Wright.

In Bryant Road a woman came to the door and said, “I always vote Socialist so I’ll be voting for Matt Wright”. An ex-building worker from Abbey Road told us, “I’m sick of the three main parties and I would never vote for the BNP so this time I’ll support your stand as a workers MP getting the average wage.” Disgust at Tories, Lib Dems and particularly New Labour was a constant theme with most people.

Quite a few people said they had signed Workers MP on a Workers Wage petition at one of our regular stalls. In Whitehouse Road a woman said, “I’ll probably vote for you because I’ve seen your stall many times in Hanley and I know that you are not just campaigning at election time.” She was also keen to get a union organised where she works so we’ll be talking to her again to see how we can help.

Everyone we spoke took one of our leaflets and sixteen people bought a copy of the Socialist. This weeks copy has the Socialist Party Manifesto for the General Election. You won’t be able to find this Manifesto in the national newspapers because they are all owned by millionaires and therefore don’t want to give a voice to ordinary working class people. But you can see the Manifesto by clicking on the following link ;

    How can you attack the lib dems who have not even really had a chance to put their policies into action. Anyone with half a brain knows there is going to have to be cut backs but these cut backs should be in the form of stopping high paid people paying low tax, cutting down on high paid ‘professionals’. Jumping on the MP expenses bandwagon wont be winning my vote and has in fact put me off and im about as socialist as you get! This is something that has happened and as a result whichever party gets into power will go about making reforms. The way I see it is since ive been growing up I have seen the Conservatives mess things up… Now the Same with the Labour party and a chance should now be given to the Lib Dems to prove their worth. If all the smaller parties stopped bickering amongst themselves there might be a chance of stopping either Labour or the Conservatives from regaining power and causing yet more of the same repeated mistakes again and again.

    I don’t think we are in disagreement in this

    Jumping on the MP expenses bandwagon

    We aren’t jumping on the band waggon. The Socialist Party (formerly the Militant tendency in the Labour Party) has been calling for a workers MP on a workers wage for all of it’s existance. Check out Socialist Party member Dave Nellist’s (militant tendency Labour party MP) record in parliament
